The easy availability of opium has resulted in an extremely high rate of Drug addiction & HIV in the region. Manipur has the one of the world’s highest prevalence of HIV among injection drug users.
Life Challenge has been working actively in Manipur to help men fight addiction and provide hope and support to women and children who are the victims of addiction.
The first endeavor of Manipur Life Challenge was a men’s recovery center that was established in 2006 to provide long-term residential recovery services. Over 200 men have been rehabilitated through this center.
In partnership with local NGO’s Life Challenge has conducted numerous short term camps to reach out to the men in addiction and help youth stay away from addiction by making right choices.
Life Challenge setup women support programs to help women who have been affected by HIV and addiction. Weekly support groups and counseling services offered encouragement and provided hope. The Kakching women’s support program was a self support project for women who could make food that could be sold in the market. The raw materials were supplied by Life Challenge. Life Challenge also helped 70 widows and children in Bishnupur through food distribution and weekly fellowships.
Life Challenge has visited many towns in Manipur conducting prevention & awareness programs for the public explaining the dangers of addiction and education families about the devastating effects of alcohol & drugs and HIV. To observe United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse & Drug Trafficking, Public rallies have been conducted with school students spreading awareness about the dangers of drugs & alcohol and encouraging abstinence among children.
In 2013, Kakching Life School was constructed to provide love, hope and residential education to children affected by HIV and addiction.
